It’s a foggy spring morning in Istanbul, and my phone buzzes with notifications of Alessandro(22) telling me he is on his way with his beloved dog 'Pamuk" translating to cotton in English . They stroll up and we engage in deep conversation about what we wanted to do for this editorial.
Alessandro De Calino is a night owl. His most intense bouts of creativity often come after midnight, so we planned o meet up in a nearby event that evening at Rika, in Beyoglu; Cihangir whereby, we were swiftly escorted to a nearby afterparty where we really got to converse and let those creative juices flow .
The evening panorama from the terrace is about as picture-postcard pretty as Istanbul gets, though at this late hour the lights on the Galata Tower have since been up . Alessandro tells me many people tell him that he reminds them of the fallen angel - if you not familiar with the 'Fallen Angel', it is a painting that was created Alexander Cabanel in 1847. The L’Ange Dechu, or Fallen Angel, may be one of the hottest artworks ever made. A winged nude shields his face behind flexed arms. His mane of hair snaps in the wind, and brows curl over red-rimmed eyes and a tear of anger. His body, of course, is perfect. His posture appears reposed, but each muscle is flexed with potential energy. Cast from heaven —this is the moment before he rises again.
My approach to this would be to take the concept of the fallen angel and run with it - and we did exactly that.. Its not everyone that gets a chance to photograph this truly unique face - a literal spitting image of what Satan would look like at his prime . So I tried to capture that essence in this series of images with it being sultry and seductive yet quite dark at times.
Fortunately we got published in not one but 2 magazines in Paris Roidx Magazine and L'effronte Journal whereby it made it so much more worth it to see our vision be received and appreciated on a global scale.
